The Machame Route is one of the popular routes for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. It is known for its scenic beauty and offers a challenging but rewarding experience for trekkers. It is often called the "Whiskey Route" compared to the "Coca-Cola Route" (Marangu Route) because it is considered more difficult but also more scenic.
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and transfer to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Attend a pre-climb briefing with your tour operator and have rest and prepare for the trek
After breakfast, transfer to Machame Gate and begin the trek through the rainforest to Machame Camp (3,010m/9,875ft). This takes around 5-7 hours.
Leave Machame Camp and trek up a steep ridge to Shira Camp (3,845m/12,615ft). This takes around 4-6 hours.
Leave Shira Camp and continue to Lava Tower (4,630m/15,190ft) for acclimatization, then descend to Barranco Camp (3,950m/12,960ft). This takes around 7-9 hours.
Leave Barranco Camp and ascend the Barranco Wall to Karanga Camp (3,995m/13,106ft). This takes around 4-6 hours.
Leave Karanga Camp and trek to Barafu Camp (4,673m/15,331ft) for overnight rest before the summit attempt. This takes around 3-4 hours.
Start the summit attempt around midnight, climbing to the summit of Uhuru Peak (5,895m/19,341ft) via Stella Point (5,739m/18,830ft). Descend to Mweka Camp (3,068m/10,065ft) for the night. This takes around 11-15 hours.
Leave Mweka Camp and descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. Transfer to Moshi for celebratory dinner and overnight stay.
