Trekking Mount Meru is a popular adventure activity in Tanzania. Mount Meru is located in the Arusha National Park and is the second-highest mountain in Tanzania, standing at 4,565 meters (14,977 feet) above sea level. The trek usually takes around 4 days to complete, and here's a general itinerary for a Mount Meru trek.
Start early in the morning at the Momela Gate, located in Arusha National Park. Complete the registration process and meet your guide and porters.
Begin the trek through the lush forest, keeping an eye out for wildlife such as colobus monkeys and various bird species. The trail gradually ascends, and you'll reach the Miriakamba Hut (2,514 meters/8,250 feet) in the afternoon.
Rest and acclimatize at the hut, enjoying the beautiful surroundings.
After breakfast, continue the trek, leaving the forest behind and entering the heather zone. The trail becomes steeper as you ascend to the Saddle Hut (3,570 meters/11,712 feet).
Along the way, you'll pass the impressive viewpoint of the Meru Crater and might encounter various wildlife, including buffalo and giraffes. Arrive at the Saddle Hut in the afternoon and rest, preparing for the summit push the next day.
It's essential to hydrate and get enough rest to ensure a successful climb.
Wake up around midnight and have a light breakfast before starting the summit attempt. Begin the challenging climb towards Socialist Peak (4,566 meters/14,980 feet) under the guidance of your experienced guide.
The trail involves steep sections, loose rocks, and scree, requiring stamina and determination. As you near the summit, you'll witness a breathtaking sunrise over Mount Kilimanjaro if weather conditions permit.
Reach the summit and take in the panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. Descend back to the Saddle Hut for a rest and refreshments.
Continue the descent down to the Momela Gate, where you'll complete the necessary paperwork. Celebrate your accomplishment with your guide and crew before returning to your accommodation in Arusha.
